Be a Good Human is a new imprint empowering kids to help the planet

Why did I start the book imprint, Be a Good Human?

I love picture books. I loved them when I was young. I loved them when my kids were little. And I still love them today. I believe picture books are powerful and can play a big role in getting young kids excited about books and interested in reading.

When I first starting having success in publishing, it was in the nonfiction space, especially in family, gardening, and activity books. I love this genre and these books, but my heart never stopped loving and thinking about picture books.

And then there was an opportunity!

In the midst of Covid, myself and several co-workers found ourselves without a job at the little nonprofit we were working at. I was completely caught off guard, as I’d never lost my job before. But after a few days of worrying, I decided to turn a negative into a positive. I asked Kristen, my former co-worker who had also been laid off, if she wanted to partner up to create a book. She said yes, and that’s how Be a Good Human started.

So what’s the focus of the imprint?

Be a Good Human has two key goals—empower kids and help teachers. All books will encourage kids to take charge in an impactful way, especially for the good of our planet. Each book will also include a classroom kit so teachers have free resources to use with students.

How many books do you have?

Right now, within my imprint are just two picture books—This Class Can Save the Planet and Our National Parks Need You. I hope to release more in the future! All of my other books are through traditional publishing, including publishers like Timber Press, Skyhorse, Globe Pequot Press, Simon & Schuster, and others. I’m proud and happy that I can continue my career as an author through traditional publishing while also starting my own imprint.

How are your books printed?

All Be a Good Human books are through Amazon’s KDP publishing program. This option has been a great way for me to have an independent publishing venture. Plus, I like that it’s a print-on-demand option, which is ultimately better for the environment.

What’s coming up next?

I have several stories written, including one about a bee, a caterpillar, and more. I just need more time in the day to bring them to life. Thank you so much for your support. I hope you will appreciate the fact that when you buy a Be a Good Human book on Amazon, you are directly supporting an independent writer and artist!
